Ammo crafting is an awesome mechanic, that lets you choose your own style, though this time I found one combination that's clearly superior to everything else. You can move freely on stairs now which is great. The quick-time type choices are interesting but there seems to be some RNG involved and these have never meaningfully changed any of my ~5 playthroughs of this game over the years. All in all, RE3 keeps up the excellent level design and pacing from 2, while smartly using its city setting.Īside from these major elements, there are some smaller changes. Later on, things become more linear and mostly move indoors but these areas are great too.

This is one of the best areas in the whole franchise. The level design smartly weaves in and out of buildings and through alleyways and really sells the illusion that you're exploring one large city. This is usually just 1 large building, but RE3 smartly just makes this environment Racoon City itself. Like most old RE games, the first half of the game is one large environment where you keep backtracking and solving lots of puzzles. There's unfortunately only one non-Nemesis boss and it's a pretty bad fight.Īside from Nemesis, the other big selling point here is the city setting. Add to that a fight where you can't see your health and you'll probably have a few more deaths in this one than any other old-school RE's. He can stun-lock you and hit multiple times for major damage. These are just unpleasant, which was surely intentional but it can feel unfair. While I love Nemesis when he's stalking you, I'm pretty mixed on the mandatory fights with him. X is oddly more similar to Nemesis than Nemesis himself in the remakes), and RE3 brings the potential of the concept to fruition. X but it was far more limited (in the original anyway. It adds some major extra tension and scares and is a major win for the game. Long before games like Amnesia and Alien Isolation, Capcom unleashed this monster that could hunt you down and follow you through the environment. There are two things that stand out about RE3: Nemesis and the city setting.

It's not quite as good as 2 or the REmake but it's miles better than Code Veronica, Zero, or the original RE1.

I'm done with RE for now but I'll definitely be back next Spring for the RE 4 remake.RE3 is one of the better old-school RE games. Village gets a score in the high 8s/low 9s from me. Heisenberg's Factory in particular was just stunning. Visuals consistently impressed and I took so many screenshots of my playthrough. Everything leading up to that was absolutely fantastic though. I loved the changes to gameplay progression made in this one as well, with The Duke, finding crystals, and hunting animals to upgrade.įor me, it was on par with RE 2, even exceeding RE 2 at times, up until the final boss which I found to be quite lackluster and disappointing. Improved upon RE 7 in just about every way as far as I'm concerned, level design, world building, enemy variety, visuals, sound effects, environmental design and variety, scope, you name it.

RE 7 was a found-footage horror film whereas Village feels like a Grimm's fairy tale come to life so far.Īlright, my final update into the void on my first time playthrough of the Resident Evil franchise:įinished RE Village last night. The tone and storytelling is dramatically different than RE7, which I wasn't expecting. This one has been fantastic so far (although a lot less scary than RE7). I started Resident Evil Village right after finishing 7 and I'm about 2 hours in. The Chris Redfield/Umbrella reveal at the end was a nice touch. I also didn't care for the final boss, but it was a pretty typical RE end-boss so it's fine. The ship near the end playing as Mia in particular was a bit of a confusing labyrinth for me. It's probably the scariest RE yet for me so far.Īs for the game itself, it was a little bit more obtuse in some of it's puzzle designs and just figuring out where you're supposed to go compared to RE2 and RE3. The first person perspective and the general vibe/aesthetic was really effective in creeping me the hell out. The first half of the game was definitely creepier than the second half, but to honest the whole damn game had me constantly on edge.

Well since this thread has kind of become my impromptu RE series progress tracker, I might as well chime in again.
